Sun sports section April 6, 2006 The Sun reports that Shawnee Mission East High School basketball standout J.D. Christie was honored in a pep assembly in his school’s gymnasium after the senior set his program’s new all-time scoring standard with 1,562 points. Christie’s point total broke the old standard held by Michael Johnson, a 1997 SM East graduate. Johnson was on hand to present a basketball to Christie at the ceremony. On the very same day, Christie made an oral commitment to attend NCAA Division I Evansville (Ind.) to continue his hoops career. Christie set the mark in his 87th of 89 career appearances with the Lancers, who advanced to the Class 6A state tournament in Emporia for the first time since 1993. He did so amid his team’s dramatic 55-48 victory over Wichita Southeast in the quarterfinal round of the state tournament. The Lancers went on to finish runner-up to Wichita Northwest at state.
