Johnson County Community College 5-9 freshman guard Taylor Bird is The Sun’s Athlete of the Week.

altBird poured in a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds in the Lady Cavaliers’ 82-72 East Jayhawk Conference win at home over Neosho County on Jan. 27.

The Lawrence High School product followed that performance with a team-high 14 points and 18 rebounds in JCCC’s 59-52 conference victory at Coffeyville Community College on Jan. 30. Coffeyville has won five of the past six conference titles, and the win marked JCCC’s first at Coffeyville since 1994. In that contest, Bird also paced the Lady Cavs with six assists and a trio of steals.

Heading into February games, Bird was averaging 12.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per contest for JCCC, which ranked fifth in NJCAA Division II with an 18-2 season record.

“Taylor’s IQ and toughness are off the charts,” JCCC head women’s basketball coach Ben Conrad said. “And she’s obviously got a lot of talent, too. Her second semester has been real strong. I really think there are nights when she just outwills and outcompetes people. I’m glad she’s on our team.”
