Talk Back calls from our readers...

A private matter

Tipping a mail carrier is customer prerogative. It’s not a question of acceptable or unacceptable. And the amount is the business of the customer and the mail carrier. Nobody else’s business.

Smoking fines

I’ve noticed in other areas of the state where minors are ticketed and pay a hefty fine for smoking. Why do we not hear of such charges when we see young children smoking many times every day in Johnson County?

Nervous animals

There are those that contend that domestic animals as well as animals in the zoo were nervous just prior to the devastating earthquake in Chile. That also would include the killer whale that killed the handler. Maybe someone should check into this. There may be more to it than we realize.

Union Station idea

Concerning Union Station losing money, my idea would be to have a train for people to take their kids on and to stop at a little town where there is a farmers market there for them and for restaurants to bring food out like a little picnic.

No secrets

There are those that say that President Obama is operating under the table and not telling us the truth. But just analyze this. He let his medical records be public, including the fact that he’s still apparently sneaking cigarettes in the bathroom. Who else would do that?

Cutbacks

The state of Kansas is falling way behind budget, which means more cutting back on state services such as schools. Thanks to the educators and the state workers and the union people who voted for liberal Democrats. You may be losing your jobs.

Running on empty

For some of the readers that might be financially depressed, I would like to make this suggestion. Do not let your gasoline in your gas tank in your car run down to empty, because the fuel pump is inside the gas tank, and it depends upon the gasoline for lubrication. So if you think you’ve got troubles now, if it runs out of lubrication, then you’re going to have to drop the gas tank and put in a new fuel pump.

Not to the moon

Caller, the space shuttle does not go to the moon. If you want to complain, at least get your facts right.

Seeking control

What really is the goal of the Obama administration? Is it to control every aspect of our lives? As you know, the government now controls some car companies, insurance companies and banks. What is next? If this so-called health care bill is passed, the government will control one-fifth of the economy, and it will affect our ability to choose our doctor, our choice of care and even our insurance company. Our freedom is at stake.

All together

Steve Rose is exactly right. He and I live in Johnson County, but we are intricately entwined with Kansas City, Mo. That’s the way it is.

Mail service

As a small child, I lived in the Chicago area, and at the time, regular postage was 3 cents. We had delivery to the house twice a day, morning and night, Monday through Saturday. It burdens me to see they are considering eliminating Saturday entirely.

Economic solution

One of the problems of the economy is we need more actual factories and fewer drive-through restaurants.

Placing blame

In response to “Responsibilities,” who blamed right-wing talk show pundits for the guy flying his plane into the IRS building, blaming them is as ludicrous as blaming the left for the crazy professor who shot the six university professors at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. No one is to blame for either tragic incident other than the two crazy people who committed this crime.

Somewhere else

At this time the rapist is loose in Waldo. But the more they proceed to try to find him or catch him or put him away, the more apt he is to move to some other district or other place and hide out for a while and then take off again and do the same thing somewhere else.

Commandment

To “Born again,” last I heard, one of the Ten Commandments was “Thou shalt not kill.”

Be responsible

When I receive a piece of mail in my mailbox that is not for me and it belongs to someone else on another street or another address, I normally will either give it back to the postal carrier or actually drive over there and give it to them. I would hope everybody would do that, but it is apparent there are people that don’t do that. I think that we are all responsible to ourselves to some degree.

Backyard fun

The kids in my neighborhood need to discover this thing called the backyard. When you kick the ball you don’t have to chase it in the street and dodge around the cars to get your ball back.

Since 2007, the University of Wisconsin has spent more than $58,878 paying for abortionist quack training in Planned Parenthood abortion mills. State law prohibits the use of taxpayer funds to pay for elective abortions or to fund abortion mills, or for encouraging or referring abortions. This reveals more of racist Planned Parenthood’s nationwide pattern of criminal activities, abuses, and exploitations of women, babies, and taxpayers.
Fire Judge Beier in November, for stalling the prosecution of dozens of felony crimes in Planned Parenthood’s Overland Park late-term abortion mill, and for gagging a judge who is a witness.

While the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Right to Life Committee continue to lie about abortion being funded by taxpayers through President Obama's healthcare proposals, 60,000 nuns sent letters to lawmakers urging them to pass the Senate bill. They correctly stated: "We are the ones who work every day with people who are suffering because they don't have health care. We cannot turn our backs on them, so for us, health care reform is a faith-based response to human need."

When will the unethical criminal's who are against women's rights finally admit that Planned Parenthood is a non profit organization and that only 3% of their services involve abortion services for women who request it? And when will they admit that they have no legal ground to stand on since they have never been able to convict healthcare providers of any crimes? The crimes are being committed by those who are against a women's Fourth Amendment rights. Tiller was rightly acquitted of all counts brought against him. Their only response is to send out assassin's to attack women and break the law.

Be sure to visit democracyforamerica.com and cast your vote to begin the campaign against Bart Stupak. Congressman Stupak needs to be thrown out of office for his odious views on women's rights. Vote so that democracyforamerica will initiate the campaign against him and then make a large contribution to his competitor and democratic challenger Connie Saltonstall who is a staunch and unwavering supporter of a woman's right to choose.

This week, Planned Parenthood distributed their brochure entitled "Healthy, Happy and Hot" at a Girl Scout panel at the United Nations, targeting pre-teen girls with instructions on planning promiscuity, sodomy, boozing and drug taking as sexual accessories, concealment of their inevitable venereal diseases, and, of course, abortions.

Hey cutbacks,

That wouldn't have anything to do with the republicans who ran our economy into the ground while they deregulated the banking industry would it? And your right-wing Kansas legislature has underfunded everything in sight including the schools. What parallel universe have you been living in?

The only thing Obama did (correctly) was to fire the CEO of GM after this incompetent fool couldn't figure out he needed to stop making SUV's that are destroying our environment. G.M. asked for government intervention to keep the company afloat and the administration did what it was legally justified in doing to fix the problem. G.M. is repaying the governments 6.7 billion dollar loan brought about by the company's incompetency and lack of foresight in making environmentally friendly economical cars like Honda. My advice would be for you to get your facts straight before attacking our President since you clearly have no idea what you are talking about.

Placing blame:

There is no question that the Fix Noise Network and their cronies are responsible for spreading lies and misinformation like they did during the healthcare debate when they lied about "death-panels" for example. They have encouraged much of the bigotry and racism we see among the "tea party" crowd. Obviously.

Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have demonstrated that skin cells found in human amniotic fluid, ethically obtainable without harming pregnant women or their baby, can be efficiently reprogrammed to pluripotency, where they have characteristics similar to human embryonic stem cells that can develop into almost any type of cell in the human body. This further renders embryonic stem cell research unnecessary as well as unethical and useless.
Taxpayer funding is now being diverted away from embryonic stem cell research, which has produced no treatments, cures, or human trials after many years of taxpayer funding, into ethical, successful adult stem cell research, which produces new cures and beneficial treatments every year.
Meanwhile, leftist Democrats are still attempting to code Obamanation's edict funding embryonic stem cell research into a new federal law which also promotes and funds human cloning with your tax money.

Great news! Joe Lieberman's attempts to expand the Wash. D.C. voucher program failed by a vote of 42-55 with both Brownback and Roberts voting for the program (natch). This is cause for celebration and another victory for separation of church and state.

Embryonic cells could potentially provide a renewable source of replacement cells for any tissue in the human body. Adult stem cells by contrast only have a limited ability to replicate in the lab. And replication is CRITICAL for research to continue. This is why Embryonic stem cell research is vitally important to address a variety of diseases and injuries and why adult stem cells alone are not sufficient for further research.

"Americans United for Life" one of the country’s largest anti-choice groups is spending $350,000 THIS WEEK in a last ditch effort to insert the Stupak abortion-coverage ban into health-care reform legislation. They are bombarding key U.S. House members with misleading advertisements and jamming Congressional offices with calls, letters, and emails filled with lies and distortions regarding abortion coverage in the new health-care system. So the lies and distortions keep coming from those opposed to women's rights. Let's make sure there are absolutely no restrictions to women's coverage in the new healthcare legislation. Donate at NARAL PRO-Choice America for advertising that will expose these lies and keep a woman's private insurer safe from this harmful legislation that attacks women.

The "Americans for Prosperity" hacks are at it again with their 'robo-calls'. This time criticizing a proposal by Sen. John Vratil, a Leawood Republican that would do the right thing and increase the cost of a 12 ounce of soda by a dime to raise $90 million for the States fiscal year beginning July 1. With America's growing obesity problem this is a wise and healthy measure. Americans for Prosperity are the same dolts who told us tobacco was perfectly safe and were against any taxes on tobacco. Their sister organization "Freedom Works" has been involved lately in the 'teaparty' movement which uses front groups or 'astroturfers' during 'town hall' meeting's in an attempt to disrupt legitimate democracy and critical discussion of the healthcare debate.

Jessica Mae Betts, 20, of Turlock, CA was sentenced Thursday in Stanislaus County Superior Court to merely 8 years in prison for abandoning her newborn daughter, Maria Mae Betts, to die in a garbage bin 16 months ago. In a disgusting plea bargain, Betts pleaded no contest to felony child abuse and an enhancement of great bodily harm causing injury or death, rather than the original first-degree murder charge.
Mothers sometimes abandon their newborns to die of exposure, alone and untouched, to avoid a murder conviction, in spite of well-known safe haven laws enacted in every state for the legalized, safe, and discreet abandonment of unharmed newborns at hospitals, clinics, police stations, and fire stations. Our only recourse now to protect these tiny victims from further atrocities is enforcing harsh murder sentences instead of these plea bargains.
