The U.S. Air Force Band of Mid-America will kick off a two-day Independence Day celebration tonight at 7 p.m. at the Liberty Performing Arts Theatre.

The event will be a prelude to Friday, July 4, when the city hosts the annual Liberty 4th Fest at Fountain Bluff Sports Complex.

The military concert, sponsored by the Liberty Tribune and the city, is sold out. Paul Miller, theater coordinator, said if there were no-shows, those seats would be given to people willing to take the chance of coming to the community center without tickets.

“If there are any available seats, they can have them, but we can’t guarantee it,” Miller said.

While activities at Fountain Bluff do not get under way until 7 p.m., the public is welcome to arrive early and have a picnic. With the exception of food and soft drinks purchased at the concession stands, all the entertainment is free.

There will be air slides, moonwalks, face painting, balloon art and caricaturists as well as three groups providing music and fireworks at dark. The Saucy Jack Band plays at 7 p.m., followed by Kychen Synk at 8:30 and the Liberty Summer Band at 9 p.m.

Mayor Bob Steinkamp said the whole town was invited. American Legion Post 95 will provide the Color Guard and a 21-gun salute, and the Lions Club will line the road leading to the sports complex with flags.

“When you think about it, this is small-town America at its best,” Steinkamp said.

“People can come out, spread a blanket or bring lawn chairs and eat Grandma’s fried chicken and listen to the music and watch the fireworks display.”

In addition to funding and staffing provided by the city and Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce, the 4th Fest is made possible through the support of volunteers and area sponsors, said Bruce Hickham, marketing and event coordinator.
