Two Miami County youth rodeo contestants took top honors at the 2008 Kansas National Barrel Horse Association State Championships held recently in Topeka.

Paige Belle Wiseman, 11, and Billy Lane Barcus, 9, both of Paola, rode their horses to victory.

Paige rode Fire Powered Jet, owned by Dana Calderwood of Osawatomie, to win the 1D Youth State Championship title. She outran a field of 121 youth competitors with a time of 14.476. She carried home a beautiful trophy saddle and cash for her riding skills.

In the same youth barrel race, Billy Lane rode his horse, Branny Style, to a seventh-place finish, clocking a time of 14.909, just 0.433 out of first. But, his big win was the coveted Kandee Crane Memorial buckle. The buckle is sponsored by Meriden Animal Hospital in recognition of the first-year youth member who places the highest in the Kansas National Barrel Horse Association Youth Championships. He also received cash.

Paige is the daughter of Mandy and Kevin Wiseman. Billy is the son of Jana and Bill Barcus.
