Klaasmeyer celebrates 13th birthday with win as Athletics beat Rockies in season finale, 6-2

D.J. Mitchell doubled and homered as the Athletics defeated the Rockies 6-2, starting teammate Tucker Klaasmeyer’s 13th birthday celebration off on the right foot Thursday evening.
It was the season finale for both of the Paola Little League Major Division teams. The Major and Minor all-stars will be playing in Arma on Monday and Tuesday. The Minors tournament starts Monday. The Majors first game is Tuesday.
Mitchell doubled in the first inning, highlighting a four-run frame for the Athletics.
The Athletics added single insurance runs in the third and fourth innings.
The Rockies did not go quietly, battling with one run in the fourth and one run in the fifth inning.
Corey Stallbaumer walked to start the game for the Athletics. Mitchell followed with a double, driving Stallbaumer home.
Ryan Hedding walked.
Michael Jensen cleared the bases with a two-run triple, making it 3-0. Sean Hedding singled. Jensen came around to score for a four-run inning.
Brayden Pearce singled to open the second inning for the Rockies and was later thrown out.
After a quiet second inning for the Athletics, Mitchell came to the plate with nobody on and one out.
He crushed a ball to deep center, dropping a line drive over the fence for a solo home run. Mitchell was greeted with jubilation by his teammates at home plate.
It was his second home run of the season. This one was to straight-away center field. The ball cleared the fence by about 10 feet and ended up in a creek behind the field.
Ryan Hedding followed with a triple and was stranded on base.
Jake Robison walked to start things off for the Rockies in the fourth inning. He scored on a two-out double by Pearce. Dustin Rojohn walked to put runners at first and second, but the Rockies left both runners on base.
Karsten Gray singled for the Athletics in the bottom of the fourth inning. He scored in the frame, making it a 6-1 game.
Mitchell Oberg doubled in the fifth inning for the Rockies. Ryan Kelly drew a base on balls. A two-out double by Robison drove home Oberg, making it a 6-2 game. The Rockies could not get a timely hit to score any more runs in the frame.
Caleb Wood made his first start of the season for the Athletics and allowed just one run on two hits in four innings of work. Wood struck out six, including the side in the third inning. He notched the win.
Mitchell and Ryan Hedding pitched in relief for the Athletics.
Robison started the game for the Rockies. Chase Jorgensen pitched two innings in relief.
Mitchell had two runs scored for the Athletics. Ryan Hedding, Gray, Jensen and Stallbaumer each scored one run.
